Sarah in her studio 2000-2007: Studio Based Work

Although born in Leicestershire in 1964, I grew up in Llannefydd in the North Wales hills. I speak Welsh fluently as I went to Welsh Primary and Secondary Schools before going on to study Art in Wrexham at foundation level, and then to study BA Fine Art in Loughborough College of Art.

I now work from my Denbigh studio. The focus of my work has been oil painting, slightly abstracted in style, painted in impasto swathes of paint, finding inspiration in the relationships between coast, sky and foreground subjects. More recently I have also started to paint subjects from my more immediate surroundings bringing subjects closer and to the foreground of the painting, notably roses in arrangements and still growing, the form of the flower allowing for my preferred paint application which tends to be thick and vigorous with a palette knife (and also for their exuberance of colour which I love). Artists that I am inspired by are De Stael, Bomberg and Welsh artists Peter Prendegast and Kyffin Williams.

Part time Teaching

Over the last few years I have sustained links with local schools and the local college, leading art workshops in painting and clay modelling as set lessons and also as after school art workshops. Projects have varied from ceramic murals to decoration of outdoor play areas and expansive murals on school loo walls (!)
